I just had a baby 1 week ago and told my doctor how I was feeling and he gave me a medication for it. For you women who had postpartum depression and were prescribed something how long were u on the meds and how soon did u see it take effect? I’m scared that I won’t get better.

It really depends on the type of medication that you are taking and the type of symptoms you are experiencing. There are support groups for Mom’s with PPD. You can probably call one of the doula’s in your area and ask them to direct you to a PPD support group. If you have the financial means to hire a post-partum doula I would recommend that also.
I hope this helps even a little bit. My daughter is 10 months old and I am still coping with PPD everyday.
r u talking to a specialist too because talking about it helps people through their trouble times???
I had postpartum depression beginning at 1 week out from delivery of my 3rd child. I took them for about 10-11 months. They really helped out. But I knew when I was ready to get off. Everything felt much more ‘controlled’. I was worried about a lifetime on the meds, but it has been almost 3 years since I quit taking them and haven’t needed them again, yet.
Do yourself and your family a favor and take the meds. I doubt you will regret it. If you have any unusual side effects let your Doc know so they can change the meds to a different brand. Everyone reacts differently to each of the meds.
Best of luck and congrats on the little one!
I had severe PPD after my daughter was born in 2002. I was on many meds… they helped, but after a while, I needed an increase in dosage and then a change to a new medication altogether. I was also in therapy for a long time.
Since my case was really severe (I was hospitalized at one point), mine lasted for a pretty long time, due to a few circumstances that surrounded my daughter’s birth, and I just couldn’t shake it. However, I kept fighting, I knew that my baby needed me, my other child, my husband… everyone needed me. Eventually I found my way back into the light.
I promise you, as long as you begin treatment right away, and if you go to therapy in addition to taking the meds, you WILL get better.
Hang in there, hon, you made the first step already, telling your doctor about how you’re feeling.
My baby is now 4 weeks old and my Dr has me on 50mg of Zoloft. Its just starting to work. Give it a few weeks and if its not working, have your Dr prescribe something else. Good luck!
I’m on paxil, which I started taking about 4 weeks post partum, and it’s only 8 weeks post partum for me now, but I feel like it’s effective. The doctor told me to expect about 4-6 weeks for it to be fully effective, but I did feel small improvements almost immediately.
My treatment also includes going for walks and getting support from other moms, so I’ve joined a neighborhood mommies group. Both of those things help a lot too.
I don’t know how long I’ll be on the meds for, but I’d assume it will be at least until I’m done breast feeding and all the hormones that are causing this have settled down at last.
I didn’t seek help for my post-partum depression until about 3 months after I had the baby. I think I was in denial about it. Honestly, after talking about it with my family and doctor, I started feeling better knowing that I wasn’t alone. My doctor prescribed Lexapro (10mg). I started feeling more like myself about 1-2 weeks into the meds.
Things will get better-the first step is getting help! Best of luck to you!
